Funky Concertina at The Taipei European School

Posted 1 year ago by Glenn Malcolm

On Saturday 19th May we are hosting the very exciting " Funky Concertina" event that is part of the World Scratch Day run by MIT University. Scratch is a computer program that allows students to build anything from automatic moving shapes to presentations all the way to fully functioning computer games.
The day will begin at 8.30am and end at 12.30pm (prizes afterward) with various breaks for mini games and prizes. The Students will take part in team games that promote creativity and collaboration. The theme of the day is solely focused on fun, funk and building on lots of computer skills.

This year we intend to combine the enthusiasm of students from our school and TAS (and more if they're interested) to collaborate in small teams and build something in Scratch and learn something new.

The sign up form for parents is here - see edtechlounge.com/scratchday2012

The reason we are using this type of response form is to replace the traditional permission slips that get lost or eaten by the dog. Important information like phone numbers don't get lost this way.

A: The student is younger than the specified age range who is very familiar with Scratch.

MAIN ELEMENTS:

I. This Year's plan is to make a concertina game effect on each computer the children use. How does this work?

The idea is that the children are given a set amount of time to amend a set game/story on the computer. This will be in the form of a story-like effect where the next team have to add their own 'Funky' creations to the backgrounds and characters.

II. Remix: Keeping with the theme "Funky" we will remix a project on the scratch website and make it funky. We will add music, shapes or interactivity to the game. This will most probably be for the older children.

III. Individual creativity - Children who Scratch at home can bring their own sprites (digital character designs), backgrounds and scripts. Have a part-made project? No problem. Build it further here with expert advice and help.
